Five Day Course: Model Calibration and Uncertainty Analysis
Rockville, Maryland - January 22-26, 2024
This course will be led by John Doherty, author of PEST.
The course will cover important aspects of decision-support modelling – aspects that will often determine whether it is successful or not.
The focus is on getting information from data, and making sure that this information is delivered to decision-makers and stakeholders in ways that they understand. Fundamental to this are the concepts and practicalities of history-matching, uncertainty analysis and problem decomposition.
These will be discussed and demonstrated in a casual and friendly learning environment.
You will also learn how to use programs of the PEST and PEST++ suites.
Both modellers and non-modellers can benefit from this course. Understanding the sources and repercussions of uncertainty allows you to understand what modelling can, and cannot, provide to environmental management. It also allows modelling to tell you what types of data can most effectively reduce the uncertainties of predictions that you care about.
Decision-support modelling is where numerical simulation meets machine learning.
Topics that are covered in the course include the following:
- Structural and parameterisation complexity
- Manual, subspace and Tikhonov regularisation
- Bayes equation
- Pilot points as a parameterisation device
- Covariance matrices
- Stochastic field generation
- Stationary and non-stationary statistics
- Linear and nonlinear uncertainty analysis
- Ensemble methods
- Data space inversion
As a course participant, you will receive a memory stick that includes:
- Copies of all slides shown at the course
- The PEST book
- Other reading material
- Workshops and tutorials that you can complete in your own time
